Google announced that they will start selling their own branded Google Phone, known as NEXUS, in the beginning of next year. Although the phone is originally manufactured by HTC, there is word that Google’s been closely working with HTC in building a high-quality phone that could hold competition to the iPhone. Unlike other phones, the Google Phone phone is said to be only sold directly by Google and thus, not subsidized.
There are rumors that the price of the phone would be anywhere from $300-500. However, I beg to differ. Google has yet to place a price on any of their services they provide of products they sell, with the exception of Google Checkout. They’ve been able to recoup their costs via ad subscriptions within Gmail, Google.com, Google Maps, Google Docs, and Google Voice. For that same reason, I have a feeling they may be handing out discounted phones with a catch.
Let’s also keep in mind that in 11/2008, FCC opened up the whitespace spectrum for use in broadband data transmissions and one of the companies that have stake in it is who else but Google.
